The "Arbitrator Training in Arbitration" organized by the Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC) on April 12-13, 2025, in Istanbul, was conducted with contributions from distinguished academics and legal practitioners.

On the second day of the training, Sunday, April 13, Prof. Dr. Ercüment Erdem, Founding and Senior Partner of Erdem & Erdem, delivered sessions titled " Assessment of the Authority of the Arbitrator”,  "Evaluation of the Arbitrator's Assessment on the Merits” and “Award Writing." Prof. Dr. Erdem shared his comprehensive views with participants on the boundaries of an arbitrator's jurisdiction, the effects of the “competence-competence” principle on arbitral proceedings, and the legal issues an arbitrator faces when assessing the merits of a case.

In his presentations, Prof. Dr. Erdem discussed the assessment of objections regarding an arbitrator’s jurisdiction, the validity of arbitration agreements, court interventions in arbitration, and the characteristics of arbitration-friendly legal systems. He also elaborated on the arbitrator’s authority to apply the law ex officio in light of the “jura novit curia” principle, inter-arbitrator discussions during the decision-making process, the practices of majority and dissenting opinions, and key points to consider when drafting an award.

This highly attended training program not only provided legal professionals with technical knowledge regarding arbitration practice but also contributed significantly to the development of the national arbitration culture by offering ethical and methodological perspectives.
