Prof. Dr. H. Ercüment Erdem Conducted Training Sessions at the Istanbul Arbitration Centre Arbitrator Training Program

The “Arbitrator Training in Arbitration” organized by the Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC) in Istanbul on April 11-12, 2026, was conducted with the contributions of distinguished academics and legal practitioners. The training program, organized for legal professionals seeking to specialize in arbitration, enhance their arbitrator skills, and acquire knowledge in line with international standards, was completed with significant participation.

On the second day of the training, Sunday, April 12, 2026, Prof. Dr. Ercüment Erdem, Founding and Senior Partner of Erdem & Erdem, delivered sessions titled “Assessment of the Arbitrator’s Jurisdiction” and “Assessment of the Merits of the Dispute.”

With respect to the assessment of the arbitrator’s jurisdiction, Prof. Dr. Ercüment Erdem shared his comprehensive views with participants on objections to the jurisdiction of arbitrators in arbitral proceedings and the role of the competence-competence principle in arbitration.

Regarding the assessment of the merits of the dispute, Prof. Dr. Ercüment Erdem addressed the structure of arbitral tribunals, the validity and binding effect of arbitration agreements, the reasons for recourse to arbitration, the limits of court intervention in arbitral proceedings, and the principal characteristics of arbitration-friendly legal systems. He also provided his assessments on the determination of the applicable law in the evaluation of the merits of the dispute, the conduct of deliberations among arbitrators, and the principal procedural and substantive considerations to be taken into account in award drafting.

This highly attended training program not only provided legal professionals with technical knowledge regarding arbitration practice but also contributed to the development of arbitration culture by offering practical perspectives on the institution of arbitratorship.
