ICC One Click: Introduction to Incoterms 2020 Rules
On April 30, 2025, the ICC Centre of Entrepreneurship hosted an insightful webinar titled “Introduction to Incoterms® 2020 Rules”, where Prof. Dr. Ercüment Erdem, Founder and Senior Partner of Erdem & Erdem Law Office and Chair of the ICC Commercial Law and Practice Commission, participated as the featured speaker.
Prof. Dr. Erdem commenced the session by providing a comprehensive account of the historical evolution and underlying legal framework of the Incoterms® rules, which are a cornerstone of international commercial transactions. In his address, he emphasized the significance of these rules in apportioning responsibilities, costs, and risks between parties engaged in cross-border trade. Drawing upon his contributions as a member of the ICC Incoterms® 2020 Drafting Group, Prof. Dr. Erdem offered nuanced insights into the interpretative challenges and practical applications of the Incoterms® clauses across various jurisdictions.
Designed to assist small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in navigating the complexities of global trade, the webinar provided participants with a foundational understanding of the Incoterms® 2020 rules, including their structure, legal implications, and risk allocation mechanisms. Prof. Dr. Erdem highlighted the practical use of the rules in international sale contracts and analyzed their interface with key legal doctrines such as delivery, transfer of risk, and liability for transport-related costs.
The session was organized as part of the ICC Centre of Entrepreneurship’s broader initiative to foster inclusive access to legal and commercial knowledge through its global network. Launched in 2020, the Centre connects chambers of commerce and ICC national committees worldwide to support the development of sustainable entrepreneurial ecosystems. The event also benefited from the resources of ICC One Click, a platform created to equip SMEs and entrepreneurs with practical tools and legal guidance for engaging in international commerce.
By bridging legal expertise with commercial strategy, this program significantly contributed to the dissemination of international trade standards and promoted greater legal certainty in cross-border transactions for emerging businesses.
